llms.txt is an emerging web standard: a plain-text file at yoursite.com/llms.txt that gives AI systems a clean, curated summary of who you are, what you offer and where your most important pages live. Where robots.txt tells crawlers what they may access, llms.txt tells AI assistants what your site actually means. When ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity needs to understand or describe your business, a good llms.txt does the explaining on your terms instead of leaving it to guesswork.
Adoption is still early, and that is exactly the opportunity. Very few websites have one, so publishing yours is one of the rare AI-search advantages that takes minutes rather than months.
llms.txt vs. robots.txt vs. sitemap.xml
The three files sound similar but do very different jobs:

How to write a good llms.txt
- Lead with an honest summary. One paragraph: who you are, what you offer, who it's for. Write it the way you'd want an AI to describe you to a potential customer, because that is literally what it will be used for.
- Curate, don't dump. This is not a sitemap. Pick the 8 to 15 pages that best represent your business: services, cornerstone guides, about, contact. Give each a one-line description that says what a visitor will find there.
- Group pages into logical sections. Services, Guides, About. Structure helps AI systems navigate the same way headings help human readers.
- Keep it current. Update it when you launch a major page or change your positioning. A stale llms.txt describing services you no longer offer works against you.
The format matters: llms.txt follows a simple Markdown convention. An H1 with your site name, a blockquote summary, then H2 sections containing links with descriptions. This generator produces exactly that structure, so you don't need to learn the spec.

Is llms.txt an official standard?
It's a community convention proposed in 2024, not a ratified standard, and adoption by AI companies is evolving. The cost of publishing one is a few minutes; the upside if assistants use it is meaningful. That asymmetry is why early adopters publish it now.
Where exactly do I upload the file?
Your website's root folder, so it's reachable at yoursite.com/llms.txt. On most WordPress hosting (Hostinger, cPanel and similar), open File Manager and place it in public_html. No plugin needed.
Does llms.txt replace robots.txt or my sitemap?
No. All three coexist and do different jobs: robots.txt controls access, sitemap.xml lists URLs for search engines, and llms.txt explains your site to AI systems in plain language. Keep all three.
How many pages should I include?
Quality over quantity: 8 to 15 well-described pages beats a full URL dump. Include your services or product pages, your best guides, and your about and contact pages. Skip tag archives, thin pages and anything you wouldn't show a new customer.
